Windows Lite is a lightweight version of Microsoft's operating system designed to run on low-power devices, is now working for a while.

Back in 2018, Microsoft was working on a lightweight version of Windows Noded Polaris, which aims to be optimized for tablets and 2-in-1 as well as desktops and laptops.

According to Brad Sams, who has been known for breaking news on Microsoft, computing Vishal has left a considerable amount of clues in his insider on Windows 10 about the light version of the OS.

But, why would Microsoft build Windows Lite? What does the company want with the low-power and parade-back version of Windows 10?

Okay, for a start, Google, arguably Microsoft's biggest competitor, has been very successful with its light chrome OS operating system, which runs on low-powered chromebooks. These devices have small hard drives and low-powered components mean they are cheap, while long battery life benefits too.

The Chromebook will struggle to run Windows 10, but Chrome OS is designed to run perfectly well on low demand hardware. Chromebooks have seen special success in the class because they are the perfect laptop for students.

It is clear that Microsoft will want a piece of this market, so the creation of Windows Light is a version of Windows in the quote that can run on devices like Cheap Chromebook.

So, here we know all the news and information about Windows Light so far, including the confirmed features and the release date.

Cut to the chase

  • what is this? A lighter version of Windows
  • When is it out? Hopefully at the end of 2019
  • What is its price? Free

Windows Light release date

We do not yet have an official release date for Windows Light. While many people were expected to get a glimpse of Windows Light at Microsoft's Build 2019 event, which takes place from May 6 to May 8 in Seattle, Washington, it seems that the operating system will not create a presence after all.

A recent tweet from Tom Warren of The Verge reveals that Windows will not be in the light event, but it may be appearing later this year.

Therefore, we may be for the release date of the late 2019 for Windows Light. Of course, this can also change, depending on how far the development is for the new operating system.

Microsoft has a previous form with a delay in releasing its operating systems, so if there is a problem, it could mean that we will not see Windows Lite until 2020

Windows Light Name

At the moment, many people are referring to the new operating system as Windows Lite, but this can not be the last name.

Brad Samms has used those clues, which combine them with insider information, which they think is currently some educated guesses about what is called "light".

This means that "Windows" branding can not even be included in it.

In the past, the operating system has been referred to as Polaris and Santorini.

Windows Light Price

Then, news about the price for Windows Light is thin on the ground. It's likely that Windows Lite will not be sold separately, but will be installed on devices already.

Windows Lite News and Rumors

Here's all that we know about Windows Light so far.

Windows Lite will not challenge ChromeOS at any time soon

Recently we heard the news that Windows Lite will not be visible any time soon.

So, when we do not see it in build 2019, then we should expect this year's end.

Microsoft is preparing "Windows Lite" for dual-screen devices

Another rumor suggests that Microsoft will overhaul the Windows Light interface so that it works on a dual-screen device.

These dual-screen gadgets are reportedly in development by various hardware manufacturers.

While the dual-screen device might be the first to ship with Windows Light, a strip-down version of Windows will also be a great fit for laptops with the aim of unseating Chrome OS in the education market.

Microsoft's Lite OS can be seriously severed to run on almost any device

In February we were prompted to see what kind of device the light OS will run on. Then, information comes from Brad Samms, and it suggests that Microsoft is working on two different types of devices named Centaurus and Pegasus on Lite.

Centaurus has been seen before - it's a dual screen 2-in-1 device that Microsoft is reportedly working on. Pegasus, on the other hand, just refers to other different styles of laptops that will run the OS at the bottom of the market.

Windows Live can have a redesigned Start menu without any live tile

We've also heard how Windows Light can get a redesigned redesigned menu that drops the features of live tile for a more minimalistic look.

As Microsoft is desirous of making Windows Lite as light as possible, it makes sense to leave the live tile. They were designed to provide buttons like tablets for touchscreen devices, which also gave relevant information. So, the live tile app for the Mail app will show you the latest email, while Weather app live tiles will give you the latest forecast.
