‘The Operators’: Slack PM Lorilyn McCue and Google Senior PM Jamal Eason on becoming a product manager and PM best practices

Welcome to this changed version of The Operators. TechCrunch is starting to publish podcasts with industry experts, with the details available to additional Crunch members so that wherever you are, you can read the conversation.

Operators put light on building products and companies that run tech industries. Talking about the experience of companies like Google, Brex, Slack, Docsend, Facebook, Edmodo, WeWork, Mint, etc., these experts share the insider tips, how to break apart areas like product management and enterprise sales. They also share entrepreneurs with best practices for employing and managing experts in their own outside areas.

This week's edition includes Slack's product manager, Lorilan Macku, which is the fastest growing enterprise software company recently, which recently listed directly to its IPO (such as Spotify), and a senior product manager on Google, Jamal Eston has been recognized as a company. Training Ground for Best Product Managers Lorelion and Jamal shared their experiences and told what product management is and what is not, how it can be obtained, and how entrepreneurs should think about product management as a discipline.

Both Lorillan and Jamal are West Point Graduates and military veterans who have deployed overseas. He is also an experienced operator not only in Silicon Valley, but also from his days serving in uniform.

Neil Devani and Tim Haseiah created the operators after seeing and listening to many psychic, philosophical podcasts about the future of the world and technology industry, and not enough attention was given to practical day-to-day work, all of which would have been is.

Tim is the CEO and founder of Media Mobilize, a media company and advertising network, and is a venture partner in the digital garage. Tim is an early stage investor in workflow (acquired by Apple), Lime, FabFfune, Oh My Green, Morning Bru, Girls Night In, The Hustle, Bright Sellers and others. Neil is an early stage investor, which is located in San Francisco, focusing on companies that solve many serious problems, including Andyola, ClearBit, Rickshawn Pharmaceuticals, Vicarious Surgical and Kudi.

If you are interested in becoming a product manager, then start your career in that area, or start a company and do not know when to appoint your first PM, you can not leave the episode.

In Episode 2, we are talking about product management. Neil interviewed Lorelen Mack, PM in Slack and a senior PM Jamal Ezon in Google.

Neel Devani: Hello and welcome to the second episode of The Operators, where we learn people about tomorrow's companies. We publish every other Monday and you can find it online at operators.com.

I am your host Neil Devani and we are coming to you from a digital garage in San Francisco today. Today's episode is sponsored by Four Sigmatic. To join me today, we have a senior product manager Gamal Ezon at Google. Talking about product management, Google is one of the top companies in the world.

Along with us, there is a product manager Lorelen Mack in Slack. Slack is one of the fastest growing enterprise software companies and has just recently been filed for its IPO. Lorelen and Jamal, thanks for joining us. This is a matter of joy for both of you.

To start just, it would be great if you could give us a bit about your background, where you went to school, and how you went to become a PM.

Lorelique MacU: Sure. I'm basically from Orlando, Florida. This story will look a bit similar because Jamal and I have a similar background.

I went to the United States Military Academy, West Point for the Underground. I studied computer science there. I served for 10 years in the army. I flew Apache helicopter for six years and I taught back to West Point for three years.

After that I did not really know what to do. Jamal was actually helpful in that process. In this I said, "I was thinking about going to school using GI Bill." I was thinking of business school, and she helped me to narrow down some schools.

I ended up going to Stanford's Graduate School of Business on the West Coast. I think a fun fact about this decision is that I was thinking about the East Coast v West Coast schools. And when he mentioned Stanford, I said no, because there are so many traffic California. And they said, "No, do not worry, you can roam around the campus."

This was a very solid interpretation for me. This is the reason why I am here today, because Jamal knows me well that "no Lorelin, you can bike." (To Jamal) I bike around the premises on the way. He was very good. Thank you.

And then I did internships in product management at Google. In the summer between my first and second year, I really liked product management. I wanted to be a little smaller than a company, so I ended up going to the slack.

Now I have been around two and a half years now. I started as a product manager on the new user experience team and recently turned into a platform.
