He was born on 31 August 1919 in Gujranwala district of Punjab. He spent most of his time in Lahore and studied there too. Amrita was fond of writing stories, poems and essays since her teens. Her first poetry collection was published when she was 16 years old. Amrita, who has written more than 100 books, is considered the first poet of the Punjabi language. His first poem on the India-Pakistan Partition, Aj Aankan Waris Shah Nu became very famous.
Amrita Pritam received the Padma Vibhushan, the country's second highest honor. He was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award. In 1986, he was nominated to the Rajya Sabha. He also worked for All India Radio.
Amrita's autobiography 'Rasiidi Ticket' is very popular. His books were also translated into many languages. He died on 31 October 2005.
